Be Proactive Instead Of Reactive

“When engaging in simple everyday banter and communications, this rule of thumb can really help suppress a lot of our negative word ‘vomit’ since we often mindlessly chat about the things we don’t like. If we refrain from expressing our negative opinions about things unless they’re directly asked for, we can train ourselves to respond rather than react the second we see or hear something and then feel we must verbalize our views about it.

Remember, even if we don’t agree with someone or something, we can still speak about the subject at hand in a positive light to encourage growth rather than guilty motivation. I like to say I express more “inspirations” than “opinions” with each passing day.”

― Alaric Hutchinson, Living Peace

Sometimes it’s difficult to know why you act in certain ways or why you make a decision or choice. I find myself questioning different decisions I make and my emotional responses. I find myself asking, “Did I make that decision because I truly felt it was the right choice or am I merely reacting to another’s negativity or the heightened energy of a situation?” And like so many of us, I like to believe that my choices and behavior are rooted in a good place. But when I’m honest with myself, I know that sometimes I allow myself to simply react to the situation. And when I allow myself to merely react, how are my actions any better than those I deem to be negative and toxic? So, perhaps it’s time to change the tone of the conversation by proactively choosing to refrain from speaking negatively and instead when given the opportunity speak about situations and people in a more positive light to foster growth instead of divisiveness. By regularly engaging in this type of behavior, you begin to train yourself to consciously control the situation instead of the situation controlling you.

Give Thanks

When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

– Tecumseh

No matter what you are going through in life, there is always something to be thankful for. It can be as simple as being grateful for being alive, for your health, or for your shelter from the cold. There should never be a moment when you feel you have no reason to give thanks. For you must always take time to step outside of your situation and really see what good still surrounds you.

How You Respond

Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have – life itself.

– Walter Anderson

You will undoubtedly face many storms in your life, but how you choose to weather the storms defines who you are. You can allow yourself to sink into despair every time something bad happens or you can choose to rise from the ashes. For it is up to you to decide your life and the gift of life in general is worth fighting for.

Follow Your Path

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

– Steve Jobs

Live your truth. Don’t get trapped by the expectations and judgment of others. Make sure that every decision you make and every step you take leads you forward down your path. Be bold, be brave, and follow your heart and intuition.

Make it Happen

“Infuse your life with action. Don’t wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen… yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.”

– Bradley Whitford

You can’t spend your entire life waiting for life to happen to you. No, if you want to change and move forward, then you must get up and make it happen. Or, you may very well spend your entire life waiting instead of living. So, decide the type of life you want and then go out there and make it a reality. The only person holding you back is you.

Get Up

“It’s not about how hard you can hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”

—Rocky Balboa, Rocky

Life will constantly knock you on your ass. The key is finding the inner strength to keep standing up each time no matter how hard the blow. For character is born from withstanding life’s toughest moments and persevering no matter the odds.

Take Risks

“Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing.”

– Denis Waitley

Life is about taking chances. It’s about getting up and taking action. It isn’t about sitting still and doing nothing. So, dare yourself to take a leap of faith without knowing what awaits you at the bottom. For you stand to gain only what you are willing to risk.

Work Hard

“Work hard for what you want because it won’t come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive.”

– Leah LaBelle

Nothing worth anything in this life comes easy. You will have to fight for what you believe in and have the unrelenting determination to go after your dreams. There will always be people around you who try to bring you down with their criticisms and negativity. But it is in these moments that you must believe in yourself when no one else does and keep singing your song. Don’t let others silence you or take your smile away.

Walk Your Own Path

“If you’re always following the crowd, you will never truly know who you are. Walk your own path.”

― Julian Pencilliah

At the end of the day, each of us must walk our own path. In order to grow, you must strike out on your own journey of self discovery and seek your truth. Don’t allow yourself to get lost in the crowd. Choose instead to take the untrodden path and pave your own way.

Keep Going

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

-Thomas A. Edison

No matter how long the night or how rough the road, you must not give up or give in. No, you must keep trying until you take your last breath. For life isn’t about how many battles you win; rather, it’s about how many times you kept fighting no matter how tired and weary you were.
